Last Monday, the queen announced that she will abdicate the throne in favour of her son, crown-prince Willem-Alexander. It's been a long time coming, but she stayed on to give him some time to have a semblance of a family life. But at 45, the limit of when you're still a promising future head of state is fast approaching (look at prince Charles to see the evidence of that), so this is a good a time as any.

Of course, the news has been making waves internationally as well. If you want to know more about the quirks of our royal family, you might want to check out this article by Associated Press that answers some questions about our monarchy.
