With Spotify, I have access to a mindnumbingly large library of music (but not everything). Faced with this, it's kinda hard to decide what to play. Sure, I could go with the musicians that I know, but somehow then it feels like I'm missing out on something.

So, feel free to recommend an artist to me in the comments! I promise I'll try to at least listen to their latest album in total!

I'm fond of Falkenbach, although would recommend only the first two albums. The song "Baldurs Tod" is probably the best example of good instrumental death metal I have ever heard. You may not like any of the other songs, but even if speed metal isn't your thing, that one song might work for you.

Rogue Traders are kind of fun, for an Aussie turn on 80s US pop music. They steal a lot of tunes but do a good job at it.

My number one favourite is Siouxsie and the Banshees. The album "Peepshow" is amazingly melodic punk/goth. I have probably listened to it more than any other album. It.. well, I'll let you listen to it. If you take any of my suggestions, this is the prime one.

In return, I expect at least one recommendation from you!

I've listened to the first Falkenbach album -- the one that has "Baldurs Tod" as the last track. I'm not that fond of the music -- to my untrained ear, it sounds like a monotonous melody played on synth with a wall-of-sound guitar.
Not my thing, but thanks for pointing it out to me. I'll get around to the others soon, I hope.

Yeah, I felt bad mentioning Falkenbach for that wall-of-sound reason. I love it when coding because the slightest office noise can distract me, so very repetitive music helps me focus.

It'll be interesting to hear if you like Siouxsie or not. Tracks 1/2/5/6/10 on that album are my favourites, not necessarily in that order.

When you're focussing on other tasks, wall-of-sound music works pretty good. I have the same with music that I know really, really well -- it's there, but I don't need to pay attention to it.

Rogue Traders: Fun music with indeed a few well-known melodies.

I am currently listening to Siouxie. Will let you know my thoughts later!

I listened to "Peepshow". I liked it, but it sounds a bit clichéd. But that is probably because they did it first and everybody immitated them. :)
I think I'll listen to more of them!

As for my recommendation to you: I think you'd like the Cocteau Twins (which was a trio, but hey). Their music is multi-layered, with lots of dream-like heavily distorted guitars and the ethereal voice of Guthrie (whose voice you know from the vocals of Massive Attack's "Teardrop").
Their albums "Blue Bell Knoll" and "Victorialand" are my favourites.

Other Siouxsie varies.. earlier they were more punk, later more pop. "Peepshow" is my favourite out of the set, but there were some good songs on other albums. The covers on "Through the Looking Glass" are interesting (depending on the person: some people loathe covers of songs they liked in the original).

I actually have one or two Cocteau Twins albums! I haven't listened to them in years, but they're floating around somewhere. I shall have to dig them up. Thanks!

Ik vond 'Only an Expert' het leukste nummer. Wel denk ik dat over tien jaar niemand deze muziek nog luistert, omdat de thematiek wel heel erg aan deze tijd vastzit...

This is why I like last.fm: I say play K's Choice, one of my favorite bands, and it plays that plus bands that fall into the same categories. I've discovered a load of new music this way.

Anyway, K's Choice, but I'm supposing you already know them. Their songs are nice to sing, klik may like them too. Same goes for Sheryl Crow and Norah Jones.

I'm also an admirer of lounge and triphop artists like Archive and Hooverphonic, but I doubt that's your thing.

definitely try "Bat for Lashes" album 'Two suns'. It's my discovery of the year so far.

Valravn's "Koder pa Snor" is also fabulous!

And have you ever heard Moya Brennan? Yes, you did. In Clannad. Well, she's solo now and I think her music's much better than her sister's (Enya). It's more electronic, symphonic, harmonious and quiet. "Two Horizons" is a good album to start with.

If you're in for an experiment, download Madredeus "Electronico"...that's absolutely top. I'm saying that because of a tip we got from you once concerning the Cocteau Twins. I think you might appreciate this music.

I'm really curious what you make of each of these suggestions!

Bat for Lashes: I liked the songs where they used a bit more rythm. klik didn't really like it -- she has little patience for music in the genre of Clannad, Enya and Loreena McKennitt...
Valravn: We heard this one when we visited you -- perhaps when you taught us bookbinding with the coptic stitch? I liked it well enough, but the singer should stop trying to sound like a cheap immitation of Björk and open her throat more when she sings.

Just plugging my own music channel here, I try to update once a day, a single track of a band not to well known over here. Mostly hipster music, maybe there's something for you there too.

And if you want my recommendation of an album, LCD Soundsystem's new one, "This is Happening." is rocking my world.

I ran across LCD Soundsystem before, because it was similar to some other stuff I listened to. I re-listened their latest CD, and indeed: I like it a lot.
