Mar. 3rd, 2010 @ 07:11 pm Old-fashioned voting
Current Mood: accomplishedaccomplished
We just voted for the city council. This was the first time that I had to color in a square with red pencil -- previous times I had to use a voting computer. But ever since a group of hackers demonstrated that those machines were insecure (by modifying the software so that it turned into a chess computer!), they haven't been used anymore.
There is something to be said for using the red pencil, re-folding the voting list (which is a pretty large piece of paper) and depositing it in the locked bus. Doing all those things gives a better sense of the gravity of excercising your civic right.

Ha!

Over here people just ignore the insecurity, even though every year it is proved by people who just unplug the box and reboot it off of a USB drive, or something amazingly trivial like that. I still go for paper ballots. Maybe it won't be counted or will get lost, but it will likely be purposeful and directed malice.

I have some colleagues who think it's retarded that we can't vote over the internet. They don't seem to care about security and anonymity -- two of the very foundations of democratic elections. I really can't understand their reasoning...

Wow. I would never consider internet voting a possibility. Off the top of my head I could probably come up with a dozen huge holes.

Besides, who wants to let those slackers sit at home and vote? Force them to put some effort into participating!

I'm with you on that! If it's worth having an opinion about, it's worth getting out of your chair to let that opinion be known.
