A meme that I still have to do

Comment on this post and I'll tell you five subjects/things I associate with you. Then you post them in your LJ and elaborate.

luna_puella associated these things with me:
1. computers
2. anime
3. geocaching
4. no-nonsense honesty
5. being a nerd

1. computers
Every since my dad let us play around on a P2000C he occasionally brought home from work, I've been enamoured with computers. The idea that you can issue commands to a machine that manipulates data... Surely the computer is the largest break-thought of the 20th century -- it was an enabler for many other technologies. Ever since I got my own computer (a Toshiba HX-10), I have never been without my own computer.
I did my first paid computer programming when I was 17, I paid my way through university by programming. Computers shaped my life in a very direct way.

2. anime
How I came to love anime is a story that I have written down elsewhere. Fansubs are the reason we canceled our cable TV subscription.

3. geocaching
Excercise for nerds. I don't like to do "the usual circuit" when walking outside, but following an arrow on a screen comes quite natural to me. It also helps that you (often) get led to the best spots and the payback of the box at the end makes it all worthwhile to me.
It's always different, which is a huge plus for me. No-one we ever took caching with us didn't like it, too.

4. no-nonsense honesty
I firmly believe that if you have a problem, you should deal with it. Nothing is being solved by moping around. No-one is helped by people who pat you on the back and who affirm you that It Just Isn't Fair, or It's Just So Hard.
If I encounter such a situation, I try to offer constructive advice. Sometimes that advice consists of a kick to the butt and the assignment to do something -- though I have found that some people react very badly to that. After some run-ins, I practise some restraint (after all, it is them who have the problem, not me).
But if people ask me for my opinion, I feel that I owe it to them to give it to them straight. Some people have learned not to ask my advice. Other people know how to deal with that, weigh my words and then do something different from what I advised -- which is good as well.
Because in the end, my opinion is just an opinion and my advice is just a piece of advice.

5. being a nerd
Wikipedia defines a nerd as:
Nerd is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests rather than engaging in more social or popular activities.
Yes, I do enjoy using my brain. Yes, I do have obscure interests and skills, and I do know a lot of stuff that nobody else knows. No, I don't pursue activities just because they are popular.
I've been a nerd all my life. I don't know what it is not to be a nerd.
