Hardware woes

Argh, I've broken klik's system.

I had planned to rebuild the old-old computer into a Linux server, with the two old HDD's (one of 20, one of 40 GB) and a network card, to serve as file server or toy machine. But I couldn't get the system to recognise the CD-ROM, so I couldn't install stuff. So then I thought we could put the 40 GB disk in klik's machine (also allowing me to recover some of the stuff that I had left on that disk), so we set to work on that. She installed the harddisk (she is so much better than me with those tiny screws), and when we switched it on again, the noise the machine produces was incredible -- like one of the fans was off-kilter or something.
Now, I've mentioned this before, but when we upgraded that machine, I thought the CPU fan was making too much noise. But when we had put the machine back together, it didn't seem that bad. Now it was back full force.
So we disassembled the machine, cleaned the dust out of the power supply and the CPU fan (man, had it gotten dirty!), but it stayed noisy.

I admit defeat here. Tomorrow, we'll go to Orbit systems for an Asrock MoBo, an AMD processor (faster than what was in that machine) and some memory (more than she had now), to rebuilt that machine into something a bit better and a bit more silent. All the rest of the stuff (HDD, CDR, DVD-ROM, graphics card, network card and sound card) should be portable from the old mobo to the new one. Shouldn't cost us more than EUR 200. Still, it's annoying.
