Yesterday, he brought his two guitar controllers to work, and after work he set up the beamer and the sound system to play a few games. I came back to work later (when klik had gone to her singing course), and joined the mayhem. You see, the mechanics of the game are pretty simple: you press the 'fret' buttons with your left hand, and press the 'strum'-button when the corresponding dots reach the underside of the screen. Basically, DDR for guitars. But add in 'star power' (which is triggered by tilting the guitar!) and a working whammy bar, and you have an amazingly amusing game. With two controllers you can do head-to-head rocking contests too.
And, unlike DDR, the songs are all well-known songs too. Not something at Avex composed, but Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water', or Motorhead's 'Ace of Spades'. There's 'Killer Queen' by Queen, 'Cochise' by Audioslave, and lots and lots more. (halfnorn take note: even Bad Religion!)
So it's not just strumming some notes -- no, this game is about ROCKING OUT!
It was 22:45 when I got home.
My parents have a habit of giving me some extra spending money for my birthday. Either my wishes are outside their budget, or I want such bizarre stuff that they don't even know where to get it. So, I get an envelope with contents. Grandma had also contributed to the birthday fund, so I had quite a bit of extra cash that I didn't know what to do with.
Until yesterday. I knew I had to get that game.
So this afternoon, I went to the FRS close to work, and scored the game+controller combo. I just finished the carreer-mode on 'easy' setting. I think I've spent two and a half hours rocking out on the guitar. And I wasn't bored a single minute -- which is more than I can say from the average level-grinding session in RPGs and/or the umpeenth lap around a circuit in racing games.
Personally, I'm waiting for the multi-player game that combines Guitar Hero, DDR, SingStar and the Eyetoy. I'm sure something wonderful can be created.
