Why I don't like D&D and Pathfinder for roleplaying

It is undoubtedly true that until the fourth edition, Dungeons & Dragons was the 'category killer' amongst roleplaying games. Nowadays, it's Pathfinder that's at the top -- itself an evolution of the D&D 3.5 ruleset.

I never really liked the rulesets, because they did not support roleplaying to my taste: rigid classes, lack of (applicable) skills... I play in a Pathfinder campaign, and we're mostly just murderhobo'ing our way across the land. Pathfinder is a ruleset for tactical combat, not for roleplaying.

This post eloquently describes my problems with Pathfinder -- much more thorough and reasoned than I could write it. I recommend it as food for thought.
