Game demos

I've downloaded some demos of various games from the Playstation Network, to see if there was anything I'd like.

First was Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I liked this one a lot! It's got a nice story set in a rich world. It looks gorgeous (dodging the uncanny valley with a slightly cartoonish look) and there's lots of directions to take your character. The demo shows the first part of the game, and it had all the makings of a very amusing game. I ordered this one today! (Also: the female characters seem to be more sensibly proportioned, as opposed to the enormous chests in Dragon Age and Skyrim...)

Next was Sniper Elite V2. The demo has you sneak through a German town towards the end of WW2, picking off enemies and setting up explosives to take out a convoy. You know I don't mind sneaking and sniping at all, so I was interested in this one as well. The controls are nice enough, and I was soon killing nazi's from great distances. However, if you manage to hit a mark, you get a nasty 'kill cam' that shows just how your high-caliber sniper shot crushes bones and organs. Yes, the nazi's become semi-translucent to show you this in great detail. I'm not looking for such violence porn, so I opted out. (Though apparently these 'X-ray shots' were very well received by the reviewers - I guess I'm not a typical gamer).

Next was Dragons Dogma. It's an action adventure. Undoubtedly there are lots of interesting tactics possible, but all it amounted to (for me) was walking up to the bad guys and mashing buttons. Fun enough for the ten minutes it took me to get through the demo, quickly forgotten afterwards.

Next was Trine 2. A 2D platformer in a fantasy setting. You can switch to any of the three characters, each with their own abilities. The mage can create a box, which the thief can use to grapple to a higher ledge where the fighter can take on some enemies. Also fun enough to finish the demo (and the backgrounds are quite nice too!) but it's just not my type of game.

And I just finished the Dark Brotherhood questline in Oblivion. Next up is the Thieves Guild!
