At our new address, we're roughly 3400 meters away from the exchange. The ADSL signal degrades over distance, meaning that the further you live from your exchange, the lower the maximum speed you'll get. In fact, when I did the postcode check with Demon, I found out that they would only sell me the slowest subscription (512 kbit/sec)!
I have grown accostumed to a fast connection, and 512 is too damn slow. Well, I could live with it, if the upload speed was at least 512 too!
There are two alternatives:
- Chello Plus. Since it's not ADSL (it's cable), it's independent of the distance to the phone exchange. Pro: I do get my 8Mbit/sec down. Con: It's UPC. I'm not a fan of UPC.
- Versatel's ADSL2+. Pro: Faster than 'normal' ADSL. Con: It's not here yet, and I would need a new modem.
What to do? Make do with the slower speed, switch to Chello, or get Chello while waiting for Versatel's ADSL2+?
Any insights are greatly appreciated!
