We had our annual apple picking event at a local orchard yesterday! Every Saturday in September, the orchard is open for people to pick their own — and while they sell the apples really cheap, they are even cheaper when you pick them yourself! And of course, apples fresh off the tree are delicious!
We were joined by friends B & J and their dog. We finished up picking just in time before the rain set in in earnest, and then retired home to start baking apple pie.

Dressed for rain, enjoying an apple fresh off the tree.

We got two bags like these: one with Goudreinet (which goes all mushy when cooked) and one with Wellant. The bags were sponsored by the market leader for baking products, and you got a free package of their apple pie mix with every bag of apples. That was a first, but perhaps that was to mark the occasion of the national fruit picking day. I don’t think we’ve had that before, but I don’t think we’ve been there at the ‘main’ day before. It wasn’t extra busy, but that must have also been because of the bad weather that was

First pie. It fell apart after cutting it up, but that didn’t really detract from the taste!

Picking your own means you can choose which ones you find appealing! We left a lot on the tree and picked only the ones with the most red.

Awesome! :D

I need to ask around here, if anyone has apple trees I can buy some from, you've inspired me.

Why not plant one yourself? :)

I've thought about it, but I already have 2 trees in the garden now (a fig and a mulberry), and two more trees might be a little much. Apple trees have to be planted in pairs with 2 different types, since apple blossoms are self-sterile, i.e., they each need a different type of apple tree that blossoms at the same time to provide pollen. Plus, the types of apples I like best take at least ten years for the tree to start setting fruit. I'm not sure I have the patience, haha!

At the orchard, they had trees with lots of non-edible, small apples interspersed to take care of the pollination. Apparently those trees produce lots of blossom, which helps to attract bees and with the pollination.

Yep, the orchards where I bought that sample box of apples earlier this year has those trees too. They sell the tiny apples for crafts and decoration projects people might do with them, but they're not edible, i.e., taste bad.

It sounds like you enjoyed apple picking and you also came home with some delicious looking apples. The pie looks great, loaded with apple and raisins. You certainly enjoyed the fruit of your labor!

It looks great!

Mum used to take us fruit-picking at the fruit farm in a nearby village. We used to cycle there on the roads and then cycle back, laden with fruit on the sea wall. I particularly love apple and blackberry pie. A real taste of autumn!

You mean, a pie that has both apples and blackberries? Hmm, I don't think I've ever had that, but the idea intrigues me...
