Day 6: How can a players make a world seem real?
By treating the world as if it’s real. And that is all in the details.
Portray your character as an actual person, with motivations and a personality — not just a list of numbers on a sheet of paper. Approach NPCs as actual people who have their own lives going on, not just as sources of information or conflict.
Also: by asking questions. “How did this get here, and why?” is a good question to ask — perhaps you’ll learn something about the history of the adventuring location. And the GM should also be asking questions. “What does your character know about the heraldry of the neighbouring barony?” Allow players to come up with suggestions and treat those seriously.
Get everyone to add details to the setting, and it will become rich and alive.
