How would an agricultural society keep deer out of their unattended plots?

I think deer generally prefer woodland, so they would naturally steer clear of farmland. And if not, some serious dry stone walling.

Or just surround your property with dense woodland. That helps with erosion as well. (farms out here tend to do this; cheaper upkeep than fences too)

Fences are obvious. But scarecrows and windchimes are much prettier.

One book I'm reading has the home garden "fenced" by deer-attractive shrubs; the idea is to distract them.
Most farmers over here, though, seem to rely on the VENISON approach. And maybe electric fences.
If th4e society is low-tech, the guns and electric fences won't work... but then there will also probably be wolves etc. to eat excess deer.
